Theodor Madsen (1880-1965) - Sculptor
Theodor Madsen started his artistic career as a model builder trainee at Royal Copenhagen in 1886. From there he continued to the technical school in Copenhagen follow by a formal art education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1898-1902. Theodor Madsen worked on and off Royal Copenhagen as an independent artist, but he designed many characters for Royal Copenhagen on a freelance basis. His period as signing artist at The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory 1896-1904, 1907- 18, 1927-31, 1934-1935.
In his early period he created several birds, sea lions and the highlight of his early period was an Elephant with moor and mahout mounted with stones from the the Michelsen silversmith but also a Flying Barn Owl (912) was formed by him, but it appears that the devices for hanging it in the ceiling was a major challenge, so it might never have come in to serial production. We at Klosterkaelderen.com are proud to be able to present this fine art nouveau piece in our inventory at this point.
In his “middle” period 1907-1928 he continued designing birds, but also a few interesting cats was formed by his hands. In 1928 he created one of his rare figurines of people: The Rosebud (3009): A girl sitting in a kind of garment has been in production for some years and is widely known and appreciated by collectors. It is not well known that there was a standing boy counterpart (3505) also standing swept in a garment. This one has not been produced in many numbers like rosebud. It also appear that he was asked to make a follow up on the Lotte Benter series of children in National dresses creating the Lapland boy (3407) only one more figurine is listed as coming from his hand – a boy with spaniel (3007) which I have not yet seen
