Lucie Rie's works, primarily consisting of hand-thrown vases and bowls, are remarkable for their modernist forms and her use of bright colors. She studied ceramics at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, a school of art and crafts. In 1937, she won a silver medal at the Paris International Exhibition, and the following year, Rie moved to London to escape the Nazis in Austria.
