Up through the 1800's tobacco became more common and became quite popular amongst common people. During the 1700's, it was only reserved for the richest to enjoy this expensive imported product.

Chewing tobacco became quite popular and by this activity it should be spat out from time to time. Since you did not necessarily want to leave the bar, card games or the dinner to handle this, you bought a spittoon like this.

It would be located on the floor in the room so it could be reached without to much hassle.

This is manganese colored glass and has been quite expensive. Colored glass was up to 40% more expensive than the clear glass.

Based on the attachment at the bottom, it dates from the 1880s.
