The hammeren is made of wood and it was used by the bloodletting, - a medical procedure where blood was withdrawn from the patient. The method is not used any more.
The bloodletting was used 1 to 2 times a year to get healed or to prevent illness. In the towns often by the barber and in the countryside by the smith.
