The set became some of Thorvaldsen's most popular plates. Each of them symbolizes the two parts of the day, and together they symbolize day and night as a whole. "The night" flies passively across the sky with closed eyes, like the children in her arms. The animal of the night, an owl, is also seen on the plate.
