Meissen Blue Onion (German: Zwiebelmuster) is one of the most iconic and enduring porcelain patterns in the world, created by Meissen Manufactory around 1739. Despite its name, the design doesn't actually depict onions—instead, it features stylized motifs inspired by East Asian (especially Chinese) porcelain, such as pomegranates, peaches, and flowers, adapted into a European aesthetic.
The pattern is traditionally hand-painted in cobalt blue on white porcelain and became a symbol of elegance and refinement throughout Europe. Over time, "Blue Onion" was widely copied by other manufacturers, but authentic Meissen pieces are marked with the factory’s crossed swords emblem.
It remains a beloved classic, still in production today, valued for both its artistic quality and historical significance.
