Wilhelm Nicolai Marstand (1810-1873). One of the great painters of the Danish Golden Age. He was educated at the Academy of Arts under C.W. Eckersberg in 1826-1833. He was in Italy for the first time in 1836 and painted several well-known paintings of idealized depictions of Italian folk life. He became a professor at the Academy in 1848 and later its director.
