Electrical switch in alabast and gilded brass

main

main sub: 1
Length 6 cm.

Electricity became widespread in Denmark around 1900, and quite quickly it is out in the homes of the upper middle class.

It was thought to be a modern thing to have put in electricity, so instead of putting the wires into the wall, they were put in metal pipes along the panels and door frames. In many places, these tubes are still used. The contact itself would hang freely down from the ceiling near the wall.

Another purpose of the electricity was to summon the helping staff, maids. There would be a wire between the floorboards at the dinner table where the lady of the house would sit, where she could, with a contact like this, discreetly call the maid when needed.
